Amazon Expands Its Robotics Portfolio with Astro for Business

Amazon’s commercial security robot Astro for Business brings mobile patrol, security alerts, remote monitoring, and subscription-based services to small and medium-sized businesses.

Amazon’s robotics portfolio is expanding once again.

Recently, technology giant Amazon announced Astro for Business, a commercial intelligent robot designed to provide small and medium-sized businesses with services such as surveillance patrols and security alerts. The goal is to help businesses prevent burglary, reduce security risks, and protect their assets.

Before this, Amazon had also planned a major upgrade for its home robot, Astro for Home. By integrating advanced AI technologies, the home robot is expected to gain conversational capabilities similar to ChatGPT.

With products that continue to evolve and application boundaries that keep expanding, Amazon is steadily moving toward a broader robotics ecosystem.

1. Amazon Targets the Security Industry with Astro for Business

Astro for Business continues the appearance of the home version.

Although the robot looks cute and friendly, it is actually designed as a nighttime security guard for commercial spaces. It is a crime-prevention tool created especially for small and medium-sized businesses such as retailers and manufacturers.

Astro for Business integrates a mobile navigation system and supports both remote control and autonomous movement.

It is also equipped with a high-definition periscope camera with night vision capability. The camera supports 10x optical zoom and can tilt, allowing the robot to provide clear real-time images around the clock in both bright and dark environments.

The robot can patrol freely within an area of up to 5,000 square feet, helping cover blind spots that fixed surveillance cameras may not be able to reach.

2. Mobile Patrol and Remote Monitoring

Astro for Business also integrates a voice interaction system and supports two-way communication.

When the robot detects suspicious signs, such as an unknown person appearing or abnormal sounds during movement, it can automatically send an alert.

Staff members can remotely view the live video feed from Astro’s camera, investigate the situation, and respond accordingly.

This helps protect business assets even when the owner or staff are not physically present.

3. Additional Security Features

The commercial version of Astro adds several useful features, including:

  • Smoke detection
  • Burglar alarm integration
  • Custom patrol routes
  • Cloud video storage
  • Remote viewing
  • Security alerts
  • For commercial locations that require 24-hour monitoring, such as hotels, retail stores, and warehouses, Astro provides a mobile security system.
  • It can supplement the blind spots of traditional fixed surveillance cameras and improve the overall monitoring coverage and effectiveness.
  • Anthony Robson, Head of Product for Amazon Astro, said in a statement that Amazon has been testing Astro in various businesses. According to him, Astro has helped provide visibility in blind spots and areas that existing fixed cameras cannot see, giving business owners greater peace of mind and helping protect their inventory and property even when they are not on site.
  • Astro for Business is mainly aimed at small and medium-sized retail businesses, restaurants, warehouses, and similar commercial scenarios.
  • According to Amazon, the commercial version of Astro had already been tested with selected customers last year and received positive feedback.

4. Robots Are Moving Toward Subscription-Based Services

Astro for Business is priced at USD 2,349.99, which is approximately RMB 16,782.

In addition to purchasing the robot itself, customers can also subscribe to value-added services to unlock more functions.

Astro Secure

Astro Secure costs USD 60 per month.

It enables autonomous patrol functions, supports custom patrol routes and patrol frequency, sends alerts to users, and allows Astro to automatically navigate to the target location to check the situation.

Ring Protect Pro

Ring Protect Pro costs USD 20 per month.

It can store Astro’s surveillance videos in the cloud for up to 180 days and synchronize with motion sensors and alarm devices.

Virtual Security Guard

Virtual Security Guard costs USD 99 per month.

When abnormal events occur, this service allows the robot to respond quickly and assist with security handling.

If customers want to use the full value of Astro, they may need to pay Amazon up to USD 179 per month in subscription fees.

This combination of hardware and software subscription services is still relatively uncommon in consumer-grade robot products. It may also provide a new operating model for other robot manufacturers.

5. Strong Market Potential, but Full-Scale Commercial Adoption Still Needs Time

For businesses, security is a top priority and often a major challenge.

According to data from the National Retail Federation, business losses caused by theft and other crimes reached USD 100 billion in 2022 alone.

Many large retailers have expressed concerns that theft is eroding profits, and some small retailers have even been forced to close their stores because of such losses.

Therefore, there is real demand for security robots, and the market potential is significant.

Astro for Business is an important step for Amazon in expanding robots into commercial applications. However, full-scale commercial adoption will still take time.

First, Astro for Business has not yet covered the global market. It still needs to prove its adaptability in different countries and different business environments.

Second, the current monitoring performance and intelligence level of Astro still have certain limitations. Continuous optimization will be needed before it can fully meet the complex requirements of commercial environments.

Third, Astro’s business model still needs to be tested in the real market. Whether enterprise customers are willing to continue paying relatively high subscription service fees, and whether Astro can continuously create enough value, remain to be seen.

6. The Future of Commercial Security Robots

From home robots to commercial security robots, the application fields of robots are constantly expanding.

Robots are accelerating their penetration into different business environments.

These applications will further promote breakthroughs in core technologies such as:

  • Autonomous navigation
  • Environmental perception
  • Human-machine interaction
  • Remote monitoring
  • Intelligent alerts
  • Mobile security response
  • As robot applications continue to mature, the business model of service robots will also continue to evolve.
  • The industry will need to find the right balance between user value and commercial value.
  • Technology giants such as Amazon have both the capability and the responsibility to become pioneers in this process of large-scale application.
  • Their experience may help the entire robotics industry better understand how commercial security robots can be deployed, operated, and improved in real-world business environments.
