Common Power Supply Methods in Network Surveillance Systems

There are three common power supply methods for network surveillance systems:

1.Separate Power Supply

In this method, a 220V AC power supply is used to power the device terminal, and an external 12V/24V power adapter is connected to provide power to the equipment. This method requires laying separate power lines.

2.Centalized Power Supply

This method uses a 12V/24V centralized power supply to power all device terminals. It also requires the installation of power lines.

3. POE(Power over Ethernet) Power Supply

In this method, power is provided to all device terminals through a POE switch, and no separate power lines need to be installed.

Choosing the Appropriate Power Supply Method

When choosing a power supply method, both the working environment and cost need to be considered:

1.Outdoor:

For outdoor environments, separate power supply is commonly used. The appearance of the 8+2 network cable (a traditional 8-core network cable with 2 additional power cables) has greatly facilitated the wiring of surveillance systems, avoiding the need to install separate power lines. To reduce costs, a 4+2 network cable can also be used.

For very long distances, composite fiber optic cables (fiber + power combined) can be used.

2.Indoor:

If the site where the installation is taking place already has network cables installed and the cables meet the required standards (at least Category 5 or higher, oxygen-free copper, with a wire diameter of 0.45mm), it is recommended to use POE-powered equipment for the entire system. Ensure that the POE equipment is standard to avoid compatibility issues that could cause equipment to malfunction or be damaged.

If no network cables are already installed, it is recommended to use a centralized power supply module to power the system (multiple centralized power modules can be used if there are many devices). The power rating of the centralized power supply module should be at least 30% greater than the total rated power of all the surveillance equipment.
